In the weight loss theatre we will be visualizing new
behaviors to lose weight. Let’s face it, the weight loss battle is mental. Ben
and Jerry’s ice cream is not the real reason we are overweight even though it is
convenient to blame them. The real reason is that we eat the entire carton of
Chubby Hubby at 3 AM in the morning instead of a single serving.
Across the front of your mental theatre screen are six very
shiny white scales each about three feet apart from each other. You are standing
on the first scale looking across at the other scales. The scale you are
standing on shows your current weight. The next scale shows your weight minus
one pound. The scale after that shows your current weight minus two pounds and
so forth. Take a large step from the scale you are on and move to the next
scale. Look down and see that you have lost one pound. Feel happy that you have
lost the first pound. Stand up a little bit straighter and know that you have
made the first successful step. Pat yourself on the back. It is very important
to acknowledge each small step forward. Now step across the remainder of the
scales one at a time until you come to the last scale. Stop on each scale, look
down and congratulate yourself. On the last scale look down and see that you
have accomplished your goal of losing five pounds.
As you look back to the first scale see a large pile of all
of the junk food you left behind. Each time that someone offered you something
during the last month that you did not really want or need you added it to the
pile rather than stuffing it into your mouth. It is a very gross looking pile.
Hostess Ding Dongs and cold McDonalds French fries are all glommed together. You
are very lucky that all of that crud is in the garbage pile and not in your
body.
Wave to the pile of junk food and see it disappear along
with the group of scales that you have stepped across. You are at your new
starting point. Stand tall with perfect posture and smile broadly. Feel how your
pants fit slightly better than before. Touch your body and feel the small
changes in its contours. You hear your favorite song playing loudly. Children
run up to you handing you bouquets of flowers congratulating you for believing
in yourself. Everything around you feels and smells warm and delicious.
Come back to reality now so we can talk about weight loss
basics.
Trying to lose weight is a double whammy. We need to slay
both the mental dragons causing the overeating behaviors and we also have to
deal with the primitive physiology of the body’s response to decreased intake of
food. If you simply stop eating, even for twelve hours your body will do its
best to slow down your metabolism by as much as 40%. The assumption is that
there is about to be lean times for finding food.
